Intracoronal Bleaching

Intracoronal Bleaching

The intracoronal bleaching or internal bleaching is a technique used for whitening the teeth’s color and is different from over-the-counter solutions. Internal bleaching should be done by an endodontist and can be performed only after successful root canal therapy. Internal bleaching is not for everyone; Dr. Cohenca will evaluate and determine treatment on an individual basis.

What are the different reasons for teeth discoloration?

Teeth discoloration might be due to cavities or any previous dental trauma. The discoloration occurs from the interior of the tooth and then starts showing outward. Discoloration of all teeth could be because of a physiological evolution such as a patient’s age, or certain medications or habits, like smoking.

What is the difference between teeth whitening and internal bleaching?

Both professional teeth whitening and internal bleaching are two different procedures, with which you can attain the same desired result. They make your teeth appear whiter, but the processes used in both are widely different. Professional teeth whitening is often known as external bleaching. The common methods used in teeth whitening are in-office teeth whitening, probably using a laser, and at-home teeth whitening treatments. On the other hand, internal bleaching is a little invasive teeth whitening process and is strictly meant for people who went through root canal surgery.

How does internal bleaching work?

Internal, or non-vital, bleaching makes a darkly discolored tooth that underwent root canal therapy into a whiter one. The endodontist places a chemical oxidizing agent within the coronal portion of a tooth to remove tooth discoloration. In this treatment, the endodontist places the bleach crystals inside the tooth for several days, and then during the next dental visit, the bleach crystals are removed. Again, this procedure is performed several times.
